The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments. This organisation began in 1889 as the first multilateral political organization in the world, encouraging cooperation and dialogue between all nations. Today, IPU promotes democracy and helps parliaments become stronger, younger, gender-balanced and more diverse. 178 Member Parliaments, 14 Associate Members, and increasing numbers of parliamentarians from all over the world are involved in their work.
In the first of the IPU’s two annual global meetings, the 144th Assembly of the IPU and its related meetings were hosted by the Parliament of Indonesia. The assembly took place in Nusa Dua, Bali (Bali International Convention Centre) from Sunday, 20 to Thursday, 24 March 2022. Now that COVID-19 measures are being eased, hundreds of parliamentarians from all over the world got to meet (Corona- proof) in person again.
Presence had the privilege to support the IPU again this year with the interpretation of their Assembly sessions. A team of 30 interpreters was sent off by Presence to Bali, while an additional 22 interpreters worked online for sessions taking place on-site.
During 144th Assembly, the General Debate gave delegates the chance to deliberate, exchange views and initiate parliamentary action to address the climate emergency, which now affects every country worldwide. The task of the IPU members was therefore to identify what parliamentary action should be taken to soften the impact of the climate emergency and to implement the Paris Agreement.
With the war in Ukraine in mind, IPU members adopted a resolution on rethinking and redefining the approach to peace processes in order to promote sustainable peace.
Next to that, two new tools for parliamentarians were released: a handbook in cooperation with the World Health Organisation on Strengthening health security preparedness, and the third Global Parliamentary Report on Public engagement in the work of parliament, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme.
There was a lot on the agenda indeed. For our interpreters, it was not only a great honour to interpret at such an important conference, but the on-site team also enjoyed a pleasant time here.
